Pick 1: Old World Wine Pick

Ch. Haut Beauseajour 2014

Its nose exudes crushed granite and graphite balanced with black and blue fruits and hints of mocha. On the palate it is very bright with supple tannins and finished with fruit and tobacco tones. A wine that yearns for an hour of decanting to enjoy now or that is a perfect value for the cellar.

St. Estephe is the northern most commune of the left bank of Bordeaux. Its soil of gravel over clay makes with greater acidity and intensity than the lower appellations which make, arguably, the most cellar worthy wines overall.

Pick 2: Crowd Pleasing Wines

El Enemigo Chardonnay 2015

The ’15 Enemigo Chardonnay kicks up a notch from the great ’14 vintage. Creamier, richer, and more buttery but still fresh on the palate. The flavors are an almost wild assortment of pears, coconut, golden apples, salinity, cardamom, and vanilla. Spectacular!

One of the founding partners of El Enemigo Winery is Alejandro Vigil. He is best known as the chief winemaker for Bodegas Catena Zapata.

Pick 3: The Great Ones

Macan 2012

When Vega Sicilia and Benjamin Rothschild get together in Spain’s most historic region, you know the wine is going to be special. Macan is an incredibly rich and deep Rioja with a nose of blackberries, mocha, chocolate, baking spices, hints of graphite and tar which on the palate is silkier than the color would indicate.

When purchasing the property for Macan, Vega and Rothschild had to use fake names and buy over many years to avoid people finding out they were buying top quality properties.

Pick 4: Value Spot Light

Chandon California “Etoile” Brut NV

Etoile is a classic sparkling wine from a classic house. The bubbles are fine with a noseexpressive of brioche, apples, white flowers, and hints of citrus. If you find Champagne to be a bit too harsh or acidic but love the flavor, this wine is perfect: approachable on the palate and wallet!

Chandon California was founded in 1973 by Moet-Chandon but it wasn’t Moet’s first attempt at a sparkling wine house outside of Champagne. Moet founded another sparkling wine house in Argentina in 1959.
