Somm’s Picks for April 2016
Taittinger Brut and Ch Beaucastel top this month’s list. They’re simply spectacular wines, enjoyable with a variety of foods or by themselves. Cheers!
Taittinger is one best big Champagnes. With elegant white fruit notes racing yet gentle acidity and hints of brioche this Champagne is as good with food as it is by itself!
Despite being a “young” Champagne house founded in 1931, Taittinger is one of the 3 largest holders of vineyards in Champagne.

Amazingly juicy and bright, Martinelli makes the benchmark Russian River Pinot Noir. The nose is packed with cherries, orange zest, and sweet baking spices and finishes long its red fruit.
The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in Russian River Valley since 1880 and currently has their fourth generation working in the vineyards!

After tasting this wine I was blown away by the concentration of black and red fruits pinned in with spices, flowers and stone. This spectacular wine will drink great young or hold for 20+ years!
Beaucastel has been using organic farming techniques since the 90’s. They don’t label their wines as organic because they feel it isn’t necessary, the quality should speak for itself!

Still my favorite value wine from anywhere, Vina Albderdi will blow you away with the dry cherry notes, intensely oaky nose, and its softness on the palate. If this wine were from Napa it would cost 3 times as much, enough said.
Bodegas La Rioja Alta is a modern classic. They maintain the concept of using American oak and releasing when the wines are starting to peak while focused on improving quality in the vineyards.
