Pick 1: Old World Wine Pick

Artadi “Viñas de Laguardia” 2014

Artadi’s Vinas de Laguardia modernizes the approach for Rioja. Its dark, ripe, fruity aromas are clean and composed with oak, complementing rather than stealing the show. This Rioja is a superb wine for food or by itself.

Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle, the founder and winemaker of Artadi, left the DOCa of Rioja in 2016 because he felt the traditional designations of Rioja (Crianza, Reserva, etc.) didn’t pay enough attention to the specific Terroir of each village.

Pick 2: Crowd Pleasing Wines

Stag’s Leap “Karia” Chardonnay 2016

Rich and fresh with a palate composed of pineapple, yellow apple, vanilla, with mineral undertones, and caramel notes. A magnificent Napa chardonnay that reminds you that Napa isn’t just for Cab.

Stag’s Leap’s 1973 Stag Leap Vineyard Cabernet 1973 is part of the permanent collection in the Smithsonian National History Museum because of its victory over its French counterparts in the 1976 tasting of Paris.

Pick 3: The Great Ones

Dominio de Atauta “Valdegatiles” 2009

The nose starts with black earth tones, stone, and black cherries but opens up with layers of chocolate, violets, more minerality, and tastes cleaner and more powerful with every minute. The tannins have already relaxed and are so smooth it’s like drinking a liquid Mercedes!

The wines of Dominio of Atauta reflect the unique region of Atauta Valley in Ribera del Duero. This valley has been cultivated for over 1000 years and has one of the few remaining Pre-Phylloxera Tempranillo vineyards in the world!

Pick 4: Value Spot Light

Patz and Hall Sonoma Coast 2015

This wine is another example of why Patz and Hall is considered a benchmark pinot producer. Juicy, rich, and smooth, this pinot’s layers of cherries and berries on the palate is hemmed in by notes of baking spices that finishes fresh and leaves you wanting more.

The seeds for the idea of Patz and Hall began in the 1980s when Donald Patz and James Hall struck up a close friendship while working together at Flora Springs Winery
