Somm’s Picks for May 2018
Renato Ratti “Ochetti” 2015
Ochetti shows the best of Nebbiolo with notes of raspberries and strawberries in perfect harmony with its savory character of spice, cedar, and hints of dark chocolate, all without being too powerful to enjoy young like many Barolos or Barbarescos
Renato Ratti was a pioneer in Piemonte winemaking and has led the charge to elevate the international reputation of the region despite being a newcomer starting only in 1965.

Ken Wright Shea Vineyard 2015
The ‘15’s from Ken Wright are so elegant, complex, silky, and well composed I had to pick two of them! The Shea is a richer, more full-bodied pinot than Latchkey with a darker fruit profile and Shea vineyard’s typical gravelly undertones.
Ken Wright’s importance to Oregon pinot noir can’t be overstated. He is the man who authored the rules and layout of one of Oregon’s most important AVA’s: Yamhill-Carlton.

Ken Wright Latchkey Vineyard 2015
While the Shea is a stunning pinot with big pedigree, Latchkey (one of the new vineyards Ken is working with) has made the best Ken Wright pinot I’ve ever tasted! Big ripe black cherries, strawberries, sweet spices, floral undertones, and a plush mouthfeel that still has structure. This may be my favorite Oregon pinot ever!
In 2014, Ken was named by Wine Spectator as the Master of Pinot Noir in Oregon.

Ca Del Bosco Franciacorta NV
If you find Prosecco too light and too sweet but love the stone fruit and apple notes on the nose it gives you, then try Ca Del Bosco’s Prestige Cuvee. This fine sparkling has the easy smoothness of prosecco but with less sugar and much more complexity of fruit on the palate and greater freshness.
Ca Del Bosco has been making top quality sparkling wines in the region of Franciacorta 20 years before the region was recognized for its sparkling wine potential.
