Somm’s Picks for September 2018

Pick 1: Old World Wine Pick

Deutz Rose NV

Supremely delicate nose of strawberries, vanilla, and rose petal with a rich, creamy mousse on the palate. The flavors of brioche, strawberries, and lemon are so inviting that you’ll find the glass empty before you realize it.

Deutz as a Champagne house is unusual since instead of the normal two Tete de Cuvees (a Blanc and a Rose) that are typical, Deutz produces three: Cuvee William Deutz, Amour de Deutz, and Cuvee William Deutz Rose.

Pick 2: Crowd Pleasing Wines

Resonance Pinot Noir 2016

Easy to confuse with a premier cru Burgundy on the nose because of how beautiful and complex it is. On the palate, it shows the same layers of minerality, blackberries, red cherries, raspberries, floral tones, with added spice and mineral intensity. A pinot that really shows how Oregon can outclass California pinot.

Resonance owes its Burgundian style to its winemaker Jacques Lardiere who was the head winemaker for Louis Jadot and has been making wine in Burgundy for over 40 years!

Pick 3: The Great Ones

Freemark Abbey Napa Cabernet 2014

Rich, mineral with ripe black currants, blackberry jam, notes of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, crushed granite, and blueberries. This stellar cab balances the fruit of Napa with the power and richness of old world winemaking. Truly one of my favorite Napa cabs, year in and year out.

Freemark Abbey is one of Napa’s oldest wineries and was the first woman-founded winery in Napa in 1881!

Pick 4: Value Spot Light

Torremilanos Crianza 2014

This Ribera del Duero always over delivers with a nose full of black cherries, caramel, vanilla, mocha, and blueberries. On the palate, it is powerful with added chocolate tones and clean minerality. An unbelievable value for any Cab drinkers looking for an alternative.

The main grape of Ribera del Duero is called Tempranillo, which has many different names such as: Tinto fino, Tinto de toro, tinto del pais, aragonez, cencible and tinta roriz.
