Somm’s Picks for March 2020
Pick 1: Old World Wine Pick
Les Cadrans of Lassegue 2015
A rich and layered St. Emilion with plenty of ripe plum, dried black cherries and blackberries, orange peel, tea leaves, cinnamon, all balanced out by the iron rich clay minerality. These flavors are underpinned with a velvety palate with moderate tannins and elegant acidity.
Pierre Seillan is most famous for his 13 100 point wines from Verite in Sonoma county but is originally from Gascony so he was thrilled to return to making Bordeaux at Ch. Lassegue.
93pts Robert Parker
Pick 2: Crowd Pleasing Wines
‘Bonanza’ Cabernet by Caymus Lot 2
The flavors of blueberry pie, blackberry, cherry cola with notes of milk chocolate and toast are layered over the inky and superbly smooth palate. This Bonanza cab is a very hedonistic people pleaser that works perfect for a cocktail or as a simple pleasure at the end of a long day.
The name of this wine reflects the “bonanza” of the great state of California – the discovery of land where delicious Cabernet can be farmed according to Chuck Wagner.
4.0 Vivino
Pick 3: The Great Ones
Peay Estate Chardonnay 2017
This chardonnay delivers layers of lemon, tangerine, pear, wet stone, and chalk in an elegant and rich palate. The wine changes in the glass to deepen in complexity and flavor showing more minerality, apricot, and floral tones. Exploring this wine is a delicious adventure that sadly ends when you finish the bottle.
Peay is a small family owned organic winery who’s winemaker Vanessa Wong worked at Peter Michael Winery, Ch. Lafite-Rothschild, and Domaine Jean Gros in Vosne Romanée.
95pts Vinous
Pick 4: Value Spot Light
Unshackled Red Blend 2018
Ripe and lush, Unshackled shows that despite being Prisoner’s little brother it demands just as much attention and delivers almost the same fruit and smoothness at almost half the price.
This new addition to the Prisoner Wine Company’s lineup has a label that looks like a metallic codex that represents creatively finding the right combination to make a great wine.
90pts Wilford Wong
